The most critical issue facing the people of Tennessee is to extend the economic recovery so that all people are positively affected. The 26th House District has many people who are not seeing their family income grow, or perhaps they are working multiple jobs just to keep afloat.
We need to figure out more ways to encourage small business start ups and to nurture those local businesses that have the capacity to grow. Most job growth will come from the small business sector.
We need to recognize that when we cut budgets for schools and for local government, we are cutting jobs and putting people on the street. Jobs that were once considered "recession proof", such as teaching, nursing and law & justice, are all facing layoffs.
Most importantly, we cannot forget that the longer-term solution is in changing how we prepare ouyr workforce for the 21st Century economy. That means we must look at our educational systems carefully. What is taught and how learning take place need revision or we will fall behind in the globally-competitive world economy.
No reasoning can possibly justify cutting funds in education. Education of the electorate is critical in applying free-thinking and the generation of new ideas. Larry Miller's approach to this issue is sound and a strong argument for his election to the Tennessee State House of Representatives.
