Social Media in My Campaign

One thing that people will say about me is that I am usually ahead of the pack when it comes to using technology.  The Chattanoogan.com, Hamilton County's original online news publication, recently featured a story on my use of social media applications like Facebook, Twitter and Flickr to extend the reach of my campaign.

I know that not everyone uses social media, but recent reports indicate that there has been huge growth in the use of Facebook alone.  Here are some staggering numbers:
  • Monthly active users on Facebook now total 901 million
  • 1 in 7.7 people in the world have a Facebook account
  • Monthly mobile users now total 488 million
  • 300 million photos are uploaded to the site each day
  • Facebook hosts 42 million “Pages” with 10 or more likes                          (source:  HubSpot Marketing)
The usual thinking is that this is stuff that only the young care about.  In fact, the largest growth for Facebook has been with users 35 and older.   I try to post something on my campaign page every day, and I also encourage people to LIKE my page - this gives it greater reach.  I am also using Facebook advertising to call attention to my campaign.  In a little over two weeks, my advertisement has been displayed 106,535 times.

My first real effort in social media was with with Flickr, an application for the storage and retrieval of photographs.  I now have almost 20,000 photographic images available on Flickr.  So far, these have been viewed about 718,000 times.  My "Photostream" should have over a million views by year's end.  I created a Flickr Group called 100,000 Photographs of Chattanooga about four years ago.  While it is a ways from 100K, it is close to 20,000, making this the largest repository of images about our fair city.
